War of the guards starts at KaTropa

THE battles for roster spots in TNT’s backcourt are on.

KaTropa coach Bong Ravena yesterday said they are in the process of looking for guards who could take over the slots of veterans Jayson Castro and Ryan Reyes in the future.

“Someday, those guys will retire so we thought it best to start the search for their probable replacements early,” said Ravena.

TNT would have plenty to choose from.

Aside from holdover RR Pogoy, the KaTropa have also acquired Simon Enciso and Ed Daquioag through trades as well as Kib Montalbo and Val Chauca from the rookie draft and Jay Alejandro and Gryann Mendoza from free-agency.

There is also Bobby Ray Parks, whose contract negotiation is expected to be ironed out within the week.

The PBA kicks off its 45th season with the Philippine Cup on March 1 and Ravena said they have enough time to make their assessment.

“Actually, iyung mga nandiyan sa amin ngayon, lahat sila for evaluation pa,” Ravena said. “Siguro by mid-February meron na kaming choices.”

Those who fail to make the final 15-man lineup will be relegated to reserves but could be called up anytime.

“Nasa team pa rin sila. We can still get them para doon sa lineup. Anytime, puwede namin sila i-activate,” Ravena pointed out.

TNT active consultant Mark Dickel said he likes the composition of his guard-heavy lineup as it is.

“For me, I like all the guards that we got,” said Dickel in an interview with sports website spin.ph.
