THE country’s top jins take center stage on Feb. 8-9 when they compete in the Smart/MVP Sports Foundation/PLDT Home Ultera National Carlos Palanca Jr. taekwondo championships at the SM Mall of Asia Music Hall.
Among the veterans who will vie for slots in the 2020 Philippine national team are Pauline Lopez, Kurt Barbosa, Arven Alcantara, Samuel Thomas Harper Morrison and Dave Cea.
The PTA’s new secretary-general, Raul Samson, said 1,500 athletes are expected to see action in kyorugi (free sparing) and Poomsae (forms) in the prestigious two-day event.
Kyorugi will feature senior, junior, cadet and grade school fighters for both male and female while Poomsae will be disputed in two divisions — individual and free style.
Samson said the competition will serve as a tune-up for the Philippine team members to the Asian championships, World Junior championships and World Poomsae championships this year.
Parents interested to enroll their children in the sport and martial art enthusiasts are invited to watch the event, which starts at 9 a.m.
The tournament sponsors are PLDT, Meralco, Philippine Sports Commission, Philippine Olympic Committee, Milo and Inspire Sports Academy.
