A UNIFIED national volleyball league.
It’s one of the priorities in the 10-point plan laid down by veteran sports and volleyball hand Ramon “Tats” Suzara in hitting the ground running as the newly-elected president of the Philippine National Volleyball Federation Inc.
“Following the FIVB structure, and all other examples in other countries, I want to have our very own national league, which is part of the 10-point strategy,” Suzara said on Radyo5 92.3 News FM’s Power and Play program hosted by former PBA commissioner Noli Eala.
“This is part of the unification to have a national league where you have the top teams all over the country participating. It can be professional, semi-professional, or a commercial league,” he added.
The country has one pro volleyball league in the Premier Volleyball League, and a commercial league in the Philippine Super Liga.
Beach volleyball has two leagues in the soon-to-be-pro Beach Volleyball Republic and PSL.
The men’s play has the Spikers Turf as the top league in the country.
Using a volleyball term to emphasize his point, Suzara, 60, said the new National Sports Association is eyeing to serve all the sport’s stakeholders.
“My objective here is to have a working board that will serve all the stakeholders. All the stakeholders should participate in all the commissions and be involved,” he said. “Our slogan is to serve everyone.”
Suzara was elected last Jan. 25 in the polls supervised by the Philippine Olympic Committee at the East Ocean Palace Restaurant in Parañaque City.
Larong Volleyball sa Pilipinas, Inc. secretary-general Ariel Paredes was elected as the new group’s chairman, while the Philippine Volleyball Federation’s Arnel Hajan and the Alliances of Philippine Volleyball Inc’s Donald Caringal were elected as vice president and secretary-general, respectively.
The other members of the 13-man board are Rodrigo Roque (UAAP/LVPI), treasurer; Yul Benoza (PVF), auditor; and Ricky Palou (PVL), Charo Soriano (Beach Volleyball Republic), Carmela Gamboa (PVF), Karl Chan, former PVF president; Tony Boy Liao (APV), Fr. Vic Calvo, OP, (NCAA) and POC legal counsel Atty. Wharton Chan as board members.
