NLEX sized up defending five-team Philippine Cup champion San Miguel Beer without prized center June Mar Fajardo and made sure to run away with the win yesterday.
Leaning on a big fourth quarter assault, the Road Warriors beat the Beermen 103-97 in the Phoenix Super Basketball Tourney at the Upper Deck Sports Center in Pasig.
Center JR Quinahan anchored NLEX’s attack with 14 points on top of three rebounds and four assists, while guard Kiefer Ravena chipped in 11 markers, two boards, and five dimes.
Bong Galanza and veteran slotman Asi Taulava also tossed 11 and 10 points, respectively, for the Road Warriors, who are using the four-team pocket tourney organized by Phoenix to toughen up for the season-opening conference that kicks off on March 8.
Joining the Fuel Masters, NLEX, and SMB in the tourney is Alaska.
In the other tune-up match, Alaska charged back from an early 14-point deficit and trounced Phoenix 98-87.
Road Warriors coach Yeng Guiao was pleased with the win although it was only a scrimmage.
“Any win is a good win, even if it’s in practice. Scrimmages like this is basically trying to feel out iyong progress as a team,” said Guiao. “So, it’s a good win to beat San Miguel.”
