Muyang may end up with NorthPort

FORMER Letran big man Larry Muyang opted not to play his final year with the squad and instead joined the PBA draft set on March 14.

There’s a chance the 6-foot-6, 220-pound Muyang would be reunited with Knights coach Bonnie Tan, who is the team manager of NorthPort in the pro league.

The Pido Jarencio-mentored Batang Pier have two first-round picks and one second-round selection. Muyang could be possibly tabbed in the proceedings likely to be held virtually due to the restrictions of the dreaded pandemic.

“Numbers 2, 11, and 13 are the draft picks of NorthPort this March,” Tan told Malaya-Business Insight.

“(It’s) possible to get Larry (Muyang), will meet with my coaches this week,” he added.
Muyang, 25, was good for 12.4 points and 7.2 rebounds for Letran in the last NCAA cage wars.

A native of Arayat, Pampanga, Muyang played a key role in the All-Filipino Knights’ title win over then four-peat-seeking San Beda University in 2019.

Tan, who will call the shots for the Intramuros-based crew for the second straight season, admitted the departure of Muyang will be a big blow to his charges’ title-retention bid but he is confident his other big men will step up.

“Happy and excited for Larry Muyang,” Tan said.

“Big loss for the Knights but I do believe the other bigs of the team will step up.”

Muyang also needs to be tougher against the big boys in the pros, according to Tan.

“He needs to improve his toughness inside the paint,” he said.

Fil-Am Joshua Munzon and former La Salle standout Jamie Malonzo, also a Fil-Am, loom as the projected No. 1 pick overall.

The likes of Alvin Pasaol, Troy Rike, Leonard Santillan, RK Ilagan, Franky Johnson, Jerrick Ahanmisi, Ben Adamos, James Laput, Jun Manzo, Larry Muyang, and Andre Paras are also expected to be picked in the first round.

Reigning NCAA MVP Calvin Oftana, Ateneo big man William Navarro, and former University of the Philippines wingman Jaydee Tungcab have applied for the draft and are expected to be tabbed in the special Gilas draft since they are part of the national team training pool.
