EUMIR Felix Marcial reiterated yesterday that the sudden death of his elder brother, Eliver, who passed away in early October of a heart attack, will be an added motivation for him to win the gold medal in next year’s Tokyo Olympic Games.
Tragedy struck the Marcial family barely a week after Eumir arrived in Los Angeles when his elder brother, who was scheduled to go back to Zamboanga and be reunited with his family, suffered a cardiac arrest. He was 39.
He was thankful that MP promotions chief Sean Gibbons was willing to give him a ticket back to the Philippines to attend his brother’s wake but decided against it, considering the challenges of returning to the US and resume training due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
Instead, Marcial said he has been using this sad development to fuel his drive and fulfill his Olympic dream.
“‘Yun ang motivation ko para sa Olympics,” he said.
Coming from an impoverished family, the boxer said he wanted to attain success “para mabigyan ko ang pamilya ko ng kasagaanan at kaligayahan. Gusto kong makita silang masaya.”
