PERPETUAL Help regained its bearing just in time and beat gritty Emilio Aguinaldo College yesterday 20-25, 25-17, 25-21, 25-17 to seize solo third in the 95th NCAA women’s volleyball tournament at The Arena in San Juan.
Opposite hitter Jhona Rosal unloaded a match-best 17 points on 15 attacks and two service aces for Perpetual, while Bianca Tripoli and Dana Persa added 11 markers apiece. Skipper and setter Jenny Gaviola laced her 10-point performance with 14 excellent sets for the Lady Altas, who hiked their record to 6-2. EAC dropped to 1-7.
With the win, Perpetual redeemed itself from a stunning 20-25, 19-25, 16-25 defeat to San Beda University last Feb. 7.
In the other match, also-ran Jose Rizal University ended its campaign on a high, scoring a 25-17, 18-25, 25-21, 25-13 victory over Letran.
Team captain Dolly Grace Verzosa spearheaded the Lady Bombers’ attack with 16 points off 14 spikes, while Sydney Niegos had 14 markers.
Renesa Melgar and Riza Rose also contributed 11 points apiece as JRU wound up with a 4-5 card.
The Lady Knights absorbed their second straight loss and fell to 3-4 in a tie with idle Lyceum.
“Sobrang bagal talaga and relaxed ng performance namin sa simula. Galing kasi kami doon sa pangit na performance against San Beda, ‘di ba? So kinausap ko sila tapos sinabi ko na challenge sa sarili namin na kailangan naming makuha iyong panalo and bumalik kami sa winning ways namin,” said Carino.
“So siguro, sa sobrang focused, hindi sila makagalaw and naging erratic dahil ayaw nilang magkamali, which is hindi naman dapat. Buti na lang after ng first set, nag-usap kami and nagbago ako ng puwesto, naka-recover sila, and then maganda ang naging performance sa last three sets and nanalo kami,” he added.
After dropping the opening set, the Lady Altas took the next two and led 16-15 in the third frame.
A Persa crosscourt spike brought Perpetual to match-point before a Gaviola block on a Cathrine Almazan attack capped a 9-2 windup by the Lady Altas that sealed their triumph.
