WHO would not want to have a player like former University of Santo Tomas Tiger Cubs star center Bismarck Lina?
University of the Philippines will not let the chance to add Lina to its already formidable squad slip away.
“A young man with great fighting attitude and potential,” Fighting Maroons coach Bo Perasol said, referring to the 6-foot-5 Lina.
“Bismarck is going to be part of the Season 84 team,” he added.
Lina, 19, officially joined UP last Monday after a meeting with Perasol and UP team manager Agaton Uvero, following the path taken by former Growling Tigers captain CJ Cansino.
A cousin of former “King Tiger” and pro player Kevin Ferrer of NorthPort, Lina was good for 16.6 points, 10.9 rebounds, and 2.1 assists per game in the last UAAP juniors’ cage wars.
He also played for Gilas Youth in the FIBA Asia Under-18 Championship in 2018.
With UST’s fate hanging in the air due to accusations that former coach Aldin Ayo and the team violated the government’s strict COVID-19 health protocols when they held a training bubble at the hometown of Ayo in Capuy, Sorsogon City from mid-June to August, eight players have already left to continue their careers elsewhere.
Aside from Cansino and Lina, high-flying forward Rhenz Abando, guard Brent Paraiso, and slotman Ira Bataller moved to defending NCAA champion Letran, while reserve guard Jun Asuncion went to Mapua University.
