Gilas returns to practice at Inspire

GILAS Pilipinas is set for another training camp.

Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas executive director Renauld “Sonny” Barrios said last Saturday the Philippine five will toughen up anew at the Inspire Sports Academy in Calamba, Laguna this month.

“Magbu-bubble training ulit sila sa Inspire (Sports Academy). Sabi nga nila, we’re playing with the cards that are dealt to us,” Barrios said on Radyo5 92.3 News FM’s Power and Play program hosted by former PBA commissioner Noli Eala.

“We have the young guys who are joining the PBA draft and also who are seeded in the pool. Coach Tab (Baldwin) and his crew are working with them,” he added.

The nationals are setting their sights on the FIBA Olympic qualifying tournament set June 29 to July 4 in Belgrade, Serbia.

Barrios also said the FIBA is eyeing to hold the third window of the Asia Cup qualifiers tentatively from June 14 to 20 in Clark.

“Ang tinitignan nila is June 14 to 20. Sa ngayon, iyan ang tentative schedule,” Barrios said.

“Hindi pa sila naglalabas ng official release, pero iyon ang tinitignan sa ngayon.”
Clark was initially set to host two groups of the qualifiers— Group A where Gilas Pilipinas is bracketed, and Group C.

Three of the countries in those brackets such as South Korea (Group A), Australia (Group C), and Hong Kong (Group C), however, were included in the government-imposed travel ban as the Philippines tried to contain the spread of the United Kingdom variant of the killer COVID-19.

The government, however, lifted the travel bans on over 30 countries last Jan. 31.
