SUBIC. — Bonbon Custodio steadied Davao Occidental-Cocolife’s ship when it seemed like they were sinking on Saturday afternoon.
Tapped by coach Don Dulan to provide stability to the team, the veteran took charge, going on a personal 8-1 run to give Davao a 50-40 lead en route to a 66-58 victory over San Juan in Game 3 of their battle for the MPBL Lakan championship.
Even when San Juan, the defending champion, rallied in the fourth period, Custodio was there, dictating Davao’s offense, making all the right decisions.
“Doon na lang talaga ako maaasahan – doon sa pabagal, hindi sa pabilis. ‘Yun ‘yung role ko sa team,” said the 38-year-old in jest. He tallied 10 points, six rebounds, three assists, and three steals.
Dulay said he fielded in Custodio to calm down his teammates, who have been going toe-for-toe with the pace of the Knights.
The 5-foot-11 guard only had five minutes of playing time in the first 20 minutes, but that was really the plan, according to Dulay.
