ALL is not lost for Gilas Pilipinas despite fielding an all-amateur squad in the November window of the 2021 FIBA Asia Cup qualifiers.
While admitting they have their work cut out for them in the bubble in Manama, Bahrain, Samahang Basketbol ng Pilipinas program director Tab Baldwin hopes the team can jive on the fly to make up for their lack of preparation.
“With such a young and inexperienced team, we’re really looking at chemistry more than we are trying to develop any sort of complex tactical system. We have a very diverse group of players, players without very much experience, particularly on the international level,” Baldwin said yesterday during the SBP online press conference.
“We’ve been spending our time trying to introduce some concepts to face our opponents,” he added.
The SBP also announced that former PBA champion coach Jong Uichico will call the shots for Gilas, with Baldwin, San Beda University tactician Boyet Fernandez, and TNT assistant Alton Lister joining him in his staff.
Gilas will leave for Bahrain on Sunday and will likely not bring all members of the 16-man pool.
The ‘final 12’ will be revealed before the squad’s game against Thailand on Nov. 27.
