    AMMAN, Jordan. — Carlo Paalam and Irish Magno scored contrasting wins on Saturday and advanced to the quarterfinals of the Asia-Oceania Olympic Qualification Tournament at the Prince Hamzeh Hall here.

    Paalam, 21, easily outboxed Afghanistan’s Ramish Rahmani en route to a 5-0 victory while Magno, 27, had an even more stellar performance as she easily disposed of Winnie Au of Hong Kong in an abbreviated Referee Stopped Contest win in the second round.

    Paalam and Magno joined featherweight Nesthy Petecio, middleweight Eumir Marcial and lightweight Riza Pasuit in the quarterfinals set Sunday and Monday.

    The other Filipino campaigner on Saturday, Ian Clark Bautista, lost 0-5 to Chatchai Decha Butdee of Thailand.

    The other Pinoy boxer who also lost here is James Palicte, who fell to 2017 Asian champion Abduraimov of Uzbekistan.

    In the quarterfinals, Petecio will clash with Japanese Sena Irie, with whom she has a 1-1 head to head count; Magno faces 5-time world champion Meri Kom of India, and Pasuit fights No. 3 seed Wu Yi Shih.

    Paalam is up against No. 1 seed Amit of India and Marcial faces Mongolia’s Byamba Erdene-Otgonbaatar, who turned professional last year. Professional boxers are now allowed in the Olympics.

    Winners in the quarterfinals are assured berths in the Tokyo Olympics in July.
