ATHLETICS chief Philip Ella Juico announced yesterday that the Philippine Athletics Track and Field Association will stage two National Open trackfests – one in March and the other in October next year – inside a bubble at the New Clark City Athletic Stadium in Capas, Tarlac.
“The first National Open will be an Olympic qualifier where we hope to draw foreign entries in the region while the second will serve as our national team tryouts for the Vietnam Southeast Asian Games,” Juico said in the online session of the Philippine Sportswriters Association forum.
As chairman of the Philippine Super Liga, he said he hopes the league will be able to return with a “complete menu” of events beginning with the rescheduled PSL Invitational Beach Volleyball Challenge Cup at the Subic Bay Freeport Zone inside Olongapo City, Zambales in mid-February next year.
“We have the full support of the Bases Conversion Development Authority led by president Vince Dizon to have our National Open bubbles at the New Clark City,” Juico said in the public sports program backed by the Philippine Amusements Gaming Corp., San Miguel, Smart, Amelie Hotel, Brasca Restaurant and Go for Gold.
Juico said they rescheduled the first National Open slightly ahead to March 19 to 21, 2021 “because we looked at the schedule and saw that if we had it in April it would be too near Holy Week.”
He said national athletes and coaches will enter the NCC Athletes Village by January 16, 2021, adding the two-month intensive training would be enough “because all of them are now aware that they should begin their conditioning because they have an event to prepare for.”
