‘Duterte and Pacquiao, two prominent candidates of the administration running against each other, will divide the national votes for president, and ultimately favor the opposition.’
SARA Duterte going up against Sen. Manny Pacquiao for the presidency next year? Her political allies believe the Davao City mayor, with her father running as vice president, will be a formidable ticket, but not if the administration coalition is broken up by the hugely popular Pacquiao.
The Dutertes would have loved to fully support Pacquiao as their fair-haired boy if only they were sure of his political loyalty. The way the Pambansang Kamao has been speaking out against corruption and other public wrongdoing is showing he is gradually relinquishing his ties with the President.
The irony was that he accepted the presidency of the PDP-Laban, an offer apparently from the Chief Executive himself whom Pacquiao did not want to displease. But he has gone as far as denouncing the party resolution of its members supporting a Sara Duterte and Rodrigo Duterte ticket for president and as vice-president, respectively, in 2022.
Pacquiao’s hopes that PDP-Laban members had remained grounded on the moral principles of its late founder and long-time president, Aquilino “Nene” Pimentel, has obviously dimmed. And it seemed no surprise that party officials and members have become virtually tight-lipped as corruption scandals unraveled one after another in this administration.
The old guards of the elder Pimentel’s generation have faded away, leaving the PDP-Laban with a vanishing legacy. With massive vote-buying and computer glitches, Pacquiao’s immense popularity may not be enough to power him to victory.
What’s the basic question that needs to be resolved in the ruling coalition? Duterte and Pacquiao, two prominent candidates of the administration running against each other, will divide the national votes for president, and ultimately favor the opposition.
