Needing Ramon S. Ang

‘Ang does not trifle with political issues but speaks his mind out on socio-economic needs of the people and has done remarkably well to alleviate them.’

SAN Miguel COO Ramon S. Ang (RSA) running for president would be a refresher of the late Eduardo “Danding” Cojuangco’s futile foray into politics. The main factor that may work for Ang (but didn’t for Cojuangco) is he is not known as a political figure. Ang does not trifle with political issues but speaks his mind out on socio-economic needs of the people and has done remarkably well to alleviate them.

The major hindrance for Ang is the greater majority of the masses who had been taken remarkably by President Duterte’s endearing populist image; only he and former President Erap Estrrada were able to genuinely identify with the masa, with the masa responding extremely well with its support and adulation. Ang will have to face the fact that voters, mostly those belonging to society’s lower strata, would still go for whom they like and not whom they need.

The sad thing is Ang has been a true-blood humanitarian who should otherwise be relished by the masa, but he is not. Social media may have provided people more enlightening views on making the objective and right choices for the coming elections and his advisers may yet find ways to boost him intensively in the various online platforms.

Ang indeed may have the real answers to the social and economic malaise and the extraordinary zeal to pursue them for our country, but the masa may yet still settle for the more mundane characters they have learned to adore such as Sen. Manny Pacquiao. The “Pambansang Kamao” is, of course, not your ordinary sports celebrity turned politician.

The dire health situation that has challenged the government and left the majority of the national population in dismay may change the current political dynamics which during the time of Cojuangco had favored public officials in power then.

They say that February 14 is solely dedicated to the wife, while the 13th or the 15th belongs to the mistress or the other woman. It was ordinary for many anguished wives to live with the fact that nothing could stop their philandering husbands from joining their illegal partners on those days. But the COVID-19 crisis has virtually stamped out this love month from the philandering males’ schedule of an extended celebration and paved the way for an upside in the tortured marriage – husband and wife finally bonding at home and reconciling. God is surely good!!
