Tribesman dead in clash with NPA in Davao

A MEMBER of a volunteer security group was killed while another was injured in a firefight with New People’s Army rebels in Laak town, Davao de Oro on Friday, the military reported yesterday.

The fatality was identified as Bensar Alcano, a “tribal warrior” of the Dibabawon tribe, in Barangay Sto. Niño in Laak town, said 1Lt. Amadeuz Celestial, civil military operations officer of the Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion.

The tribe members have organized themselves into a group of tribal warriors to defend their community from communist rebels.

“They are volunteers in the area. They organized themselves to maintain peace and order in their area (during) our absence because we (military) cannot cover all areas,” said Celestial.

Celestial said another tribe member, who was an NPA member and has surrendered to government, reported the communist rebels were trying to reestablish contact with their former comrades.

Celestial said the communists asked the unnamed tribe member to give them food, and threatened to kill him if he would report to authorities their planned attack of the community.

“Despite the risk, he still reported it,” said Celestial.
