Taiwanese, 3 Pinoys arrested for smuggling


    A TAIWANESE man and three Filipinos were arrested by the PNP’s Criminal Investigation and Detection Group for alleged cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting in Tagoloan town in Misamis Oriental on Wednesday.

    Col. Harold Ramos, chief of the CIDG’s Regional Field Unit-Northern Mindanao, named the suspects as Taiwanese Chiu-Ling Su and Filipinos Christian Tong, Ma. Sharon Remo, and Nenito Pialan.

    Su and Remo were nabbed around 1 p.m. at the vicinity of Timberwood Development Corporation, Phividec area, Zone 5, Barangay Mohon in Tagoloan.

    Meanwhile, Tong and Pialan were nabbed two hours later in simultaneous operations in Zone 13, Barangay Poblacion, and Zone 3, Barangay Sta. Cruz, respectively.

    Ramos said the four suspects were arrested by virtue of an arrest warrant issued by Cagayan de Oro City Judge Dennis Alcantar for violation of Republic Act 8293 (Intellectual Property Code of the Philippines.”

    In a report to CIDG chief Maj. Gen. Napoleon Coronel, Ramos said Su is the leader of syndicate called “Singkit Group” while the three Filipinos are group members.

    Ramos said the group is “engaged in cigarette smuggling and counterfeiting operating in the province of Misamis Oriental and neighboring provinces of Region 10.” — Victor Reyes
