THE Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology yesterday lowered the alert at Taal Volcano in Batangas to Level 1.
Taal’s activities intensified in January, spewing steam and ash that reached Metro Manila. Its alert reached to Level 4.
In downgrading the alert to Level 1, Phivolcs said the volcano’s condition since February 14 ” has been characterized by low-level volcanic earthquake activity.”
Phivolcs also said Taal’s activities led to the “stabilizing ground deformation of the Taal caldera and Taal Volcano Island edifices and weak surface activity at the Main Crater and the Daang Kastila fissure.”
It said the Taal Volcano Network recorded a decline in the number of volcanic quakes. From a daily average of 141 between January 26 to February 14, it was down to 31 between February 14 to yesterday.
Phivolcs raised alert Level 4, from Level 1, on January 12 following steam-driven eruption but this was lowered to Level 3 on January 26. On February 14, the agency again downgraded its status to Level 2.
