Soldier in PMA shooting attack dies from injuries

AN Airman who went amuck inside the Philippine Military Academy in Baguio City on Tuesday, killing a soldier and wounding another, has died from the injuries he sustained during the incident.

PMA spokeswoman Maj. Cherryl Tindog said Airman 2nd Class Christopher Lim passed away at around 2:24 p.m. Wednesday.

The wounded soldier, Army S/Sgt. Vivencio Raton, succumbed to gunshot wounds on his back yesterday, according to Tindog.

Lim indiscriminately fired his M16 rifle at the PMA enlisted personnel barracks on Tuesday afternoon, killing a fellow Air Force soldier, S/Sgt. Joefrey Turqueza, and wounding Raton.

Tindog said Lim actually “shot himself after he opened fire.”

Tindog said Raton tried to stop Lim from shooting himself in the mouth. “Instead of the mouth, he was hit in the jaw,” he said.

Lim and Raton were taken to the PMA Station Hospital and later transferred to the Baguio General Hospital.

Tindog said Lim underwent surgery on Tuesday but expired a day after.

Tindog said Lim is suffering from a “mental health problem.” She said the PMA will intensify psycho-social intervention to identify and help personnel who may have mental health problems.
