Poor visibility caused by ashfall leads to death of truck driver

A TRUCK driver died and three helpers were injured in Calamba City, Laguna early morning yesterday when the driver lost control of their vehicle due to poor visibility caused by ash emitted by Taal volcano.

A report from the Calamba City police station identified the fatality as Gilbert Dawal Briones, of Sto. Tomas, Batangas. Injured were Jovin Dayson Daen, 22; Charity Flores, 33; and Reymar Dayson Daen, 34.

Police said the victims’ Isuzu truck was heading towards Manila at around 1 a.m. when it figured in an accident. Police said the truck was negotiating a curving part of the highway in Barangay Paciano Rizal when Briones lost control of the wheel, causing the vehicle to turn upside down and hit a concrete post.

“Due to the impact the driver succumbed to death due to his severe injuries while the passenger and truck helpers sustained injuries,” the report said.

Police said the driver “lost control (of the vehicle) due to zero visibility” caused by ash that covered the vehicle’s windshield.
