Palace names acting NBI chief

MALACAÑANG has designated National Bureau of Investigation (NBI) Assistant Director Eric Distor as officer-in-charge of the agency until a permanent head is named by President Duterte.

Executive Secretary Salvador Medialdea issued a memorandum on February 21 informing Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra of the designation of Distor. The NBI is one of the attached agencies of the Department of Justice.

Chief Presidential Legal Counsel and concurrent presidential spokesman Salvador Panelo yesterday said Distor’s designation followed the retirement of NBI Director Dante Gierran earlier this month.

Gierran, who served as NBI regional director for the Davao region, was appointed by President Duterte to head the NBI in 2016.

Distor’s appointment was effective last February 23 with the intent of ensuring the “continuous and effective delivery of public service” in the NBI.

Prior to his new designation, Distor worked as NBI assistant director for intelligence service. He also previously headed the NBI Internal Affairs Services.
