NPA killed in clash in Agusan

A FEMALE New People’s Army rebel was killed and war materiel were recovered after a firefight between the communist rebels and government troops in Agusan del Sur, the military reported yesterday.

Troops from the Army’s 60th Infantry Battalion were on combat operation on Sunday at the boundary of Lapaz and Loreto towns when they clashed with an undetermined number of rebels from the NPA’s Guerilla Front 3.

After the firefight, troops found at the scene the body of the still unidentified female rebel.

Also found were an AK47 rifle, a five-kilo improvised bomb, two hand grenades, two hand-held radios, an M16 rifle, two pieces of 203 ammunition, P50,000 cash, medical supplies, five sacks of rice, two flashlights, a battery cell, a solar panel, and personal belongings.

The military said they conducted the operation based on information provided by residents about the presence of the insurgents.

The death of the unidentified rebel prompted Col. John Oberio, commander of the Army’s 1001st Brigade, to warn other rebels they will also end up dead if they continue with the armed struggle.

Oberio said it time for the rebels to surrender and avail themselves of the government’s Enhanced Comprehensive Local Integration Program.
