NBI asks Pimentel to explain breach of quarantine rules

    Senator Koko Pimentel.

THE National Bureau of Investigation on Wednesday said it will invite Sen. Aquilino “Koko” Pimentel III to explain his side on his possible violation of the quarantine rules.

NBI Director Eric Distor said Pimentel will be asked to explain “after his quarantine.”

Justice Secretary Menardo Guevarra said the NBI may conduct its own probe and ask Pimentel to air his side even if no formal complaint was filed against him.

“My instruction was if Makati Medical Center or any other party in interest does not file any complaint, the NBI may initiate its own fact-finding and ask Sen. Koko to explain his side,” Guevarra said.

Pimentel drew flak recently after he accompanied his wife, Kathryna, who was then about to give birth to their first child, to the MMC on March 24, even after he had himself tested for COVID-19 on March 20 and while he was supposed to be under self-quarantine. He said he learned he was positive for COVID-19 when he was already at the hospital.

The MMC management later denounced Pimentel for breaching quarantine protocols but did not say whether it will file a complaint.

A lawyers group led by Rico Quicho said they are readying complaints against Pimentel.

Quicho served as one of the lawyers of then Chief Justice Renato Corona in his impeachment trial in 2012.
