Magnitude 5.4 quake hits Sorsogon


    A MAGNITUDE 5.4 earthquake rocked Sorsogon on Monday night, according to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs).

    No damage is expected from from the quake which is tectonic in origin.

    Aftershocks are expected.

    The quake occurred was recorded at 10:37 p.m. Its epicenter was some 37 km northeast of Prieto Diaz town in Sorsogon. It had a depth of 77 km.

    The shaking was felt at Intensity V in Sorsogon City, the province’s capital, and Intensity IV in Legazpi City and Virac town in Catanduanes, Naga City in Camarines Sur, and Catarman town in Northern Samar.

    Bulusan and Irosin towns in Sorsogon; and Catbalogan City in Samar felt the quake at Intensity III.

    Phivolcs initially assessed the earthquake to be of magnitude 6.4 but later lowered it to magnitude 5.4.

    “After getting more data and analysis, our final update is magnitude 5.4,” said Phivolcs administrator Renato Solidum.

    Solidum said they have not received information about damage caused by the quake.
