A LEADER and a member of a syndicate involved in gun-for-hire, illegal logging and extortion were killed after fighting it out with Davao Oriental policemen yesterday afternoon.
A report from the Caraga regional police office identified the fatalities as Jelfin Cotic, alias Jerome; and Jolan Cotic, alias Jodan, leader and member, respectively, of the Kapatiran Group operating in Davao Oriental and Surigao del Sur.
Police did not say whether the two, who are prime suspects in several killings, including cops, were relatives.
The two were arrested in 2019 for frustrated murder but were released after their case was dismissed due to lack of sufficient evidence and after their victim issued an affidavit of desistance.
Yesterday afternoon, policemen simultaneously raided the houses of the two, which are about 370 meters apart, in Barangay Caatihan in Boston town to serve arrest warrants against them for murder.
Police said instead of surrendering, the two opened fire at the policemen who returned fire, leading to their death.
Recovered at the house of Jelfin were an M16 rifle and one 9 mm pistol while an M16 rifle was found at the residence of Jolan.
