Japanese Yakuza member wanted for fraud nabbed

A JAPANESE tagged as a former Yakuza member wanted for fraud and hiding in the country since 2011 was arrested by immigration personnel recently.

Immigration Commissioner Jaime Morente said 71-year-old Katsumi Ohno was arrested last September 30 in Roxas Blvd., Pasay City by members of the bureau’s fugitive search unit (FSU).

The arresting team was armed with a warrant of deportation that the BI board of commissioners issued against the Japanese last June 20.

Morente said the Japanese Embassy sought their help in finding and apprehending Ohno, the subject of a standing warrant of arrest for fraud issued by a court in Tokyo.

“We also learned that his passport expired in November last year, making him an undocumented alien,” Morente said.

Investigation revealed that Ohno has been hiding in the country for nine years or since April 10, 2011 when he arrived as a tourist.

Ohno is currently detained at the BI jail in Bicutan, Taguig City pending his deportation. – Ashzel Hachero
