THE Department of Health reported 1,583 new coronavirus (COVID-19) cases yesterday that raised the number of infections in the county to 528,853 along with 67 more deaths.
Overall, the total number of fatalities climbed to 10,874.
There were 39 new recoveries, meaning the number of survivors now total 487,611.
There are still 30,368 active cases, of which 89 percent are mild cases, 5.3 percent asymptomatic cases, 2.7 percent critical cases, 2.5 percent severe cases, and 0.54 percent moderate cases.
Testing czar Vince Dizon said 34 more people from the Mountain Province tested positive for the deadly virus, including 32 from Bontoc where the new strain of the virus was reported.
Dizon could not say when the tests were done but said it involved 1,709 persons from Bontoc and 412 from Sagada, both in Mountain Province; and 7,643 people from Isabela province.
He said aside from the 32 from Bontoc, two from Sagada and 53 from Isabela also tested positive.
Dizon said this resulted in a positivity rate of 1.87 percent in Bontoc, 0.48 percent in Sagada and 0.7 percent in Isabela.
He said the country is now able to do 30,000 to 40,000 tests a day.
The Department of Health had initially said that at least 12 cases of the UK variant have been detected in Bontoc.
The DOH on Monday said 83 people in Bontoc, who were in close contact with patients infected with the UK variant, had also tested positive for the virus. Samples from eight positive patients are undergoing sequencing to find out if it they are infected with the UK variant.
A policeman from Davao region has died of COVID-19, the 29th member of the police force to succumb to the deadly virus.
The PNP also reported that 33 more policemen have been infected with the disease, bringing to 10,219 the number of infected cops as of Monday night. – With Jocelyn Montemayor and Victor Reyes
