DOH welcomes Duterte vow to sign drug price cap

THE Department of Health (DOH) yesterday welcomed the pronouncement of President Duterte that he would sign the proposed imposition of maximum drug retail prices (MDRP) on certain drugs and medicines.

Health Secretary Francisco Duque III said they are “extremely overjoyed” after Duterte said he is willing to sign the proposed Executive Order “twice over.”

“We are very happy with the President’s decision. We are extremely overjoyed by the initial pronouncement of the President that he will sign the MDRP,” Duque said, adding this is because they believe in the value of the proposed Executive Order that will drastically reduce the prices of expensive and in-demand medicines.

“This is truly a legacy building move on the part of the President to benefit such a huge number of our Filipino patients, who will now benefit from the quality, affordable, life-saving medicines,” he said.

“It will prevent impoverishment brought about by expensive drugs and medicines once the MDRP is signed by the President,” furthered Duque.

Last Monday, Duterte expressed willingness to sign the MDRP Executive Order, saying it will greatly benefit Filipinos. However, the draft EO has yet to reach his table as it is still undergoing thorough review.

Last November, the DOH submitted a list of 122 medicines and drugs that will be subjected to 56 percent drug price reduction once an EO is signed.
