DepEd tells schools: Reset graduation rites

THE Education Department yesterday told school officials nationwide to reset graduation rites set this month and reschedule the fourth quarter examinations of students in the wake of the public health emergency due to the Coronavirus Disease (COVID-19).

Education Secretary Leonor Briones said all schools can hold graduation rites from April 13 to 17, taking into consideration the guidelines and precautionary measures implemented by the health department on the virus.

Briones also said that fourth quarter examinations in the National Capital Region should be held on March 16 to 20 on a staggered basis to reduce the number of students in school per day.

She said that all schools outside NCR should hold their fourth quarter examinations from March 11 to 13. If this is not possible, they should hold examinations on March 16 to 20 on a similar staggered basis.

“Private schools in the basic education level are highly encouraged to adopt the above guidelines for the remaining period of the school year,” Briones said.

She reiterated that preventive measures undertaken by the government will only be effective if parents and local government units will do their part in ensuring students avoid places like malls, movie houses, markets and other similar crowded places.

She assured the public that DepEd will closely monitor the COVID situation with the help of Inter-Agency Task Force on Emerging Infectious Disease and provide the public timely, relevant, and correct information and action.
