A POLICE master sergeant and two suspected pushers were killed in firefights that started with a police surveillance operation against illegal drugs that went awry in Cebu City on Tuesday. Three others were nabbed.

A report from the Central Visayas regional police identified the slain cop as M/Sgt. Maximino Macua Jr., detailed with the PNP Drug Enforcement Group, Special Operations Unit 5.

A group of policemen that included Macua was conducting a surveillance operation against a group of suspected drug peddlers in Barangay San Roque Tabada around 5:30 p.m. when they were fired upon by the group, leading to a firefight.

Macua was hit and was rushed to the Miller Hospital in the city where he was declared dead.

Pursuit operations led to the arrest of two of the suspects, identified as Franco Obeso and Jeramea Zafra, at the Vicente Sotto Medican Center. Obeso was rushed to the hospital by Zafra due to wounds he sustained during the firefight.

Operatives involved in the firefight identified Obeso as the one who fired shots that killed Macua.

Six hours later, another firefight between the cops and drug suspects broke out in Sitio Cauayan in Barangay Quiot, also in Cebu City, leaving two more suspects dead. They have yet to be identified as of yesterday.

The firefight also led to the arrest of another suspect, identified as Richie Requinto.
PNP chief Gen. Archie Gamboa said Macua is the 57th policeman to be killed in the war against drugs since 2016.

“Ang sinasabi ko we will always be abiding by evidence-based operations pero ang instruction ko is still standing na huwag kayo pauna. (We will always abide by evidence-based operations but my instruction is still standing, don’t allow yourselves to be beaten to the draw),” said Gamboa.
