NINE persons were killed and six others were arrested in 24 operations conducted by the police on Saturday night and Sunday morning in Rizal, Batangas, Cavite and Laguna.
Laguna police spokeswoman Lt. Col. Chitadel Gaoiran said the operations were conducted by virtue of search warrants issued by different judges for illegal possession of firearms and explosives.
Gaoiran said she has no immediate information as to the identities and group affiliations of the slain and arrested suspects but the human rights group Karapatan said some of them are leaders and members of progressive groups.
Gaoiran said six died in Rizal while two others died in Batangas and one in Cavite.
Gaoiran said three were arrested in Rizal while three others were also nabbed in Laguna.
Karapatan secretary general Cristina Palabay said three of the fatalities were leaders of progressive groups while five of those arrested were also from progressive groups.
She identified the three fatalities as Manny Asuncion of the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan who died during police operations in Dasmarinas, Cavite; and Melvin Dasigao and Mark Lee Coros Bacasco of the urban poor group Sikkad Montalban, who both died in Montalban, Rizal.
“Nothing could be more apt than calling this day a ‘Bloody Sunday’,” said Palabay, who described the operations as “Gestapo-esque police raids.”
