INTERIOR Secretary Eduardo Año yesterday ridiculed members of the Makabayan bloc in the House of Representatives, saying the leftist lawmakers are the only ones who do not know they are linked to the Communist Party of the Philippines-New People’s Army.
“Ayaw lang nilang admit-in, pero lahat ng ginagawa nila maka-komunista naman. Sila lang yung hindi nakakaalam na communist front sila, pero lahat alam na (They’re just not admitting it, but all their actions are pro-communist. They’re the only ones who do not know they belong to a communist front. But everybody already knows that),” he said.
Año, a former Armed Forces chief, said the Makabayan bloc members should not be afraid to admit ties with the CPP as the group is not outlawed.
“Hangga’t hindi sila nagjo-join sa NPA, wala naman silang violation sa batas (Unless they join the NPA, they have no violation under the law),” said Año . The NPA is the armed wing of the CPP.
Año said he could not understand why the Makabayan bloc members are denying they are communists but do not want to condemn NPA atrocities like killings and arson activities.
“If you quack like a duck, act like a duck, then you must be a duck, not a chicken,” he said.
Año also said government’s efforts to expose the ties of the Makabayan bloc lawmakers to the communist group is not related to the 2022 elections. He said the government just wants the people to know the truth.
Año said many of the members of the communist front organizations end up as members of the NPA or organizers for the underground group.
“It’s not a coincidence they are becoming NPA members. They are are being radicalized,” he said.
“There is no such thing as coincidence. No, they’ll say they are free to make decisions. No, they made the decision because of your own doing of radicalizing them … That’s their role, their role is to recruit (NPA and CPP members),” he said.
Meanwhile, five NPA members surrendered to the PNP in Samar on Tuesday.
Ma. Rechiel Yrigon alias Suyang, 34; Ronalyn Lucendo Capoquian alias Babi; Francisco Dacles Jr. alias Jimboy; Rio Bersola alias Jepoy; and Apolonio Pabillano Jr. alias Kasid, Oscar and Polie were members of the Sub-Regional Committee Browser and Jorge Bolita Command of the CPP-NPA Eastern Visayas Regional Command.
The five turned over three cal. 45 pistols and a 5.56 mm Bushmaster assault rifle during their surrender.
PNP chief Gen. Debold Sinas said the PNP remains open to accommodating NPA rebels who will surrender, following resident Duterte’s decision not to declare the traditional yuletide ceasefire with the communists, and for the rest of his term.
