Abu Sayyaf member killed in Zamboanga

A MEMBER of the Abu Sayyaf involved in kidnap-for-ransom cases was killed in a firefight with operatives of the PNP Anti-Kidnapping Group in Zamboanga del Norte yesterday.

AKG spokesman Maj. Ronaldo Lumactod identified the fatality as Jupuri Dais, alias Jupuri Nabua, who he said is affiliated with the group of Abu Sayyaf sub-leader Almujir Yahad.

Lumactod said AKG operatives were dispatched to Barangay Poblacion in Sibuco town at around 2 a.m. to serve a warrant, issued by a Zamboanga del Norte court, for kidnapping and serious illegal detention.

Lumactod said Dais sensed the arrival of the policemen and tried to evade the lawmen while opening fire using a cal. 45 pistol. The AKG men returned fire, killing Dais.

Lumactod said Dais was a member of the Moro Islamic Liberation Front before he joined the Abu Sayyaf. The MILF signed a peace agreement with the government in 2014.

Lumactod said Dais was involved in a series of kidnapping incidents in Zamboanga del Norte, including that of businesswoman Martina Yee in 2016, and couple Jose and Jessica Duterte in 2017.

He implied the AKG thwarted a planned kidnapping, saying Dais had been “tasked to conduct spotting and surveillance in the area of Sibuco for possible kidnapping activities in the area.”

“The would-be-victims are project engineer and a contractor,” he said.
