5 NPA rebels killed

    FIVE New People’s Army rebels were killed in a firefight with government troops in Baras town in Rizal yesterday.

    One of the slain rebels, identified only as alias Onli, was an intelligence officer of the NPA unit, Sub-Regional Military Area or SRMA 4-A, operating in the Calabarzon region, said Capt. Jayrald Ternio, spokesman of the Army’s 2nd Infantry Division based in Camp Capinpin in Tanay town.

    Also killed was alias “Sandra,” a staff member of the Rebolusyonaryong Buwis sa Kaaway na Uri of the same NPA unit, said Ternio. Sandra is the wife of alias Luis,secretary of NPA’s Guerilla Front Cesar.

    Ternio said troops under the Army’s 202nd Brigade and policemen were deployed to Barangay San Juan in Baras town to serve an arrest warrant on Antonio Cule, alias Dad, finance officer and a executive committee member of the SRMA 4-A, for frustrated murder.

    The rebels opened fire at the government troops at around 2:30 am, triggering the firefight that resulted in the death of the five rebels and recovery of two M16 rifles, a cal.45 pistol, one cal .38 pistol, a Uzi rifle, electronic devices, and rebel documents.

    Col. Alex Rillera, 202nd Brigade commander, said the operation was launched based on information on Cule’s whereabouts.
