3 civilians, cop hurt in NPA bomb attack

THREE civilians and a policeman were injured in a roadside bombing that police said was perpetrated by the New People’s Army in Pilar town in Sorsogon yesterday morning.

Personnel of the 9th Special Action Company of the PNP Special Action Force were on a truck on the way to Camp Ola in Legazpi City to undergo RT-PCR testing when they were attacked by the rebels on a national highway in Barangay Putiao in Pilar town at around 7:30 a.m.

A report from the Bicol regional police office said the rebels opened fire and detonated two improvised explosive devices, injuring three unnamed civilians nearby and a policeman, Cpl. Jeffrey Enconge.

The policemen returned fire, forcing the undetermined number of rebels to retreat 20 minutes later.

During clearing operations, cops recovered at the scene an exploded IED and electrical wires.

Bicol regional police director Brig. Gen. Bartolome Bustamante denounced the rebel atrocity, saying it only proves the true nature of the rebels which he said is to sow “chaos and disorder in the community.”

Bustamante renewed his appeal to the public to resist the communist movement and “cooperate with authorities to help eradicate the threat of insurgency in Bicol.”
