A MOTORIST was killed while another was injured in a roadside bombing that the military said was perpetrated by the terrorist group Bangsamoro Islamic Freedom Fighters in South Upi town in Maguindanao yesterday morning.
An improvised bomb exploded at around 6 a.m. near a cell site tower at Timanan public market in Barangay Romongaob, according to Maj. Gen. Juvymax Uy, commander of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division based in Maguindanao.
“The military and police arrived to assess the situation in the area and found a victim lying on the ground while the wounded was taken to South Upi Hospital,” Uy said.
Police identified the fatality Alberto Delos Santos of Lebak town in Sultan Kudarat.
Uy said a second improvised bomb was found by responding troops near the site of the explosion.
“We condemn the incident,” said Uy, adding that initial investigation showed the BIFF was behind the attack.
Uy said the bomb may have been intended for South Upi town mayor Reynalbert Insular.
“Mayor Insular would have gone through the area to go to Barangay Kuya for the settlement of a problem in the said barangay,” Uy said, adding Insular canceled his trip due to the incident.
The BIFF is blamed for numerous atrocities, including bombing, in Central Mindanao. Armed Forces chief Gen. Gilbert Gapay placed the strength of the BIFF at 252 men as of end 2020.
