Jolo Estrada exudes star quality

ELLEN Adarna is making a showbiz comeback in TV5’s new sitcom, “John en Ellen,” aired Sundays at 7 p.m. The show brings back memories of the long-running “John en Marsha” that starred the late Dolphy and Nida Blanca.

It will be recalled that Ellen was last seen in the Kapamilya sitcom, “Home Sweetie Home,” where she met John Lloyd Cruz and where their romance bloomed. Ellen had to take a rest when she got pregnant and gave birth to their son, Elias.

In TV5’s new show, she plays Ellen, the wife of John Estrada as John Kulantong, and they have two teenage kids played by former child actor Yogo Singh and Angelina Cruz, the daughter of Sunshine Cruz and Cesar Montano.

The show will tackle issues concerning today’s modern family, in-law problems, as well the reliance of today’s young people on gadgets and the internet. Just like in “John en Marsha,” John here also has a meddlesome in-law. But instead of a mother-in-law like Donya Delilah, John’s in-law here is the very rich Don Lucky de la Suerte, played by Ronaldo Valdez.

How does it feel for Ellen to be acting again?

“Masaya ako to be back. I was kind of nervous at first but everyone’s supportive at our lock in taping.”

How is it working with John Estrada? “It’s really fun to work with John.

Masaya siyang kasama sa set and we’re glad people say we have good chemistry on screen. He helps me even with my Tagalog and gives me tips on how to do our scenes more effectively.”

She’s currently being linked to Derek Ramsay and although they’ve both denied it, rumors persist. Would Derek be a guest in “John en Ellen” someday? It’s John who answered the question.

“Why not? We are all good friends and we’re sure he’d be willing to support our show.”

John has always said there’s nothing wrong if romance would really brew between Ellen and Derek.

“They are both free and single. They are not stepping on anybody’s toes, so I don’t see any problem there. They both deserve to be happy.”

‘Sabi ko, pang-leading man. So nagpursigi ako until finally, pumayag siya. – Leo Dominguez’

Jolo Estrada tried acting once in “Ang Tatay Kong Sexy” with his dad, Sen. Jinggoy Estrada, and he got offers to sign up with a top network but he decided not to accept it.

“I decided to focus on my college studies and I finished entrepreneurship at Enderun,” he said. “May other offers

after that but I got so fat. I weighed 228 pounds. Na-depress nga ako when I saw my chubby self on the mirror. So sabi ko, ayoko mag-showbiz or politics. I’ll just go into business dahil ‘yun naman ang pinagaralan ko. I now have my own barber shop in San Juan and soon, I’ll open my boxing club, UltraBox. Dapat last year pa ito, but inabutan ng pandemic so ngayon ko lang uli itinuloy.”

    Jolo Estrada

He started working out and now, he’s down to 170 lbs. and looks like a hunk.

Talent manager Leo Dominguez saw him six months ago and offered to manage him, but he said no.

Leo then asked him again through his mom, Precy Ejercito, and this time he reconsidered. What did Leo see in him?

“I really saw so much star potential in him,” said Leo. “Sabi ko, pang-leading man. So nagpursigi ako until finally, pumayag siya.”

“Naisip ko, why not give it a try?” Jolo said. “If Tito Leo sees so much star potential in me and this opportunity keeps on coming my way, why not give it a shot? Baka kung later pa, too late, tatanda na ako. I’m not getting any younger kasi 27 na ako.”

Jolo is the second of four children of Sen. Jinggoy Estrada and Precy Ejercito. He comes after ex-Vice Mayor Janella and after him comes Julian Estrada who made a good impression in the movie “Relaks, It’s Just Pag-ibig.” The youngest is Jillian.

Who’s the local actress he would like to be paired with?

“More than anyone else, si Angelica Panganiban. I’ve seen her doing both drama and comedy at parang kaya niya kahit anong klaseng role ang ibigay sa kanya.”

Jolo is also a good singer and at his contract signing with Leo Dominguez, he was asked to give a sample. He sang “Kung Ako na Lang Sana” and we can say he has a good voice.

Raffy Tulfo hit it big with his Radyo5 and TV5 program, “Wanted sa Radyo,” a public service program where he helps people with problems to obtain justice from those who they perceive as oppressing them. The format quickly became a big hit with both radio listeners and TV viewers.

The film clips of warring parties confronting each other in his show became a hit even on YouTube, making Raffy a real YouTube star with 18.3 million followers, more than some big-name stars.

No doubt he is now the most popular Tulfo. He is the eighth in a family of 10, but he has now eclipsed the careers of his brothers Ramon, Ben and Erwin.

“Honestly, I don’t think of that,” he humbly said. “I’m still the same Raffy Tulfo na parang nung nagsisimula pa lang ako as reporter sa PTV4. Hindi ko iniisip na may 18.3 million subscribers ako sa YouTube, kasi baka lumaki ang ulo ko and I don’t want that to happen.”

Will he ever appear as an actor in an episode of his show?

“Ay no, I won’t act. Hindi bagay sa akin, hindi ko kaya. Sinubukan ko siya minsan, natatawa ako sa sarili ko, so hindi talaga pwede.”

What does Raffy think is the reason people keep running to him for help?

“Siguro dahil nagagampanan ko ang role na gusto nilang gampanan ko, which is in helping them solve their problems.

At mukhang naging effective naman, kaya they keep on coming back to ask for my help.”

Angelina Cruz, the eldest daughter of Sunshine Cruz and Cesar Montano, turned 19 last September 24. She’s now given her first big break in acting playing Cam, the daughter of John Estrada and Ellen Adarna in TV5’s new sitcom, “John en Ellen.” How did her parents react when she joined showbiz?

“Ever since I was a kid, I’d see my parents acting and so they know that I’ve always been interested in it,” she said at the show’s Zoom press con. “So when my mom told me that there’s an offer for me to do this show, I welcomed the opportunity to try it.”

Did she enjoy her lock-in taping for the show in Antipolo?

“Oh yes, I’m now very thankful for this opportunity they gave me. At first, I was really nervous as I’m not that fluent in Tagalog, but they taught me how to deliver my lines well and I also asked my mom to teach me. Everyone on the set was very helpful.”

How will John Estrada size up Angelina’s performance?

“Big revelation si Angelina rito. First time niyang umacting but ang galing niya. Hindi naman nakakapagtaka kasi we know na parehong magaling na actors ang parents niya.”
