Even with the whole world reeling from the coronavirus, there are many ways for people to connect – and yes, extend their compassion with the rest of humanity.
This week, netizens lauded comedienne Pokwang and actress-writer Bela Padilla for showing that we can all do our part in helping our fellow.
Pokwang, on Instagram, shared how she prepared and distributed snacks at soldiers manning checkpoints.
“Sa mundong puno ng takot at pangamba, ngiti nila ang nais kong makita at mahawa hindi ang CORONA,” she wrote on Instagram.
Meanwhile, netizens and fellow celebrities congratulated Bela Padilla for raising more than P3 million for her project to feed Metro Manila vendors who have lost their means of livelihood because of the enhanced community quarantine.
Padilla started the campaign on March 16 on the crowdfunding site GoGetFunding to raise money for the small-time sellers who have been left with no means to feed themselves and their family.
“During this inevitable pandemic, there will be a lot of Filipinos who won’t be able to rely on their normal sources of income. Our favorite taho, dirty ice cream and bananacue vendors won’t be able to secure enough money to guarantee food for their families at the end of the day for one month until our community quarantine is over.
“Let’s look out for them please and donate what we can and let’s split the money we raise 16 ways for the 16 cities of Metro Manila affected by this temporary lockdown,” the campaign description read.
The campaign was able to amass more than P1.3 million in two days.
“WE RAISED NEARLY 1.4M PESOS. FEEL GOOD ABOUR YOURSELF AND GIVE YOURSELF A HIGH FIVE IN THE MIRROR! I’M PROUD OF ALL OF US,” she wrote on Twitter.
But the good news did not stop there. Yesterday morning, the actress received even better news.
“I was just woken up by a call. Somebody donated 2 million pesos. We are now at 3.3M pesos,” she tweeted.
Other good-hearted individuals and companies also joined Bela in her campaign.
“Today is all about organizing. Quick thank yous to all the people willing to help so far. Pia Campos, Matteo Guidicelli, Anton Capistrano (I am relying on your trucks right now), Landers grocery, Ligo Sardines. THANK YOU.”
