Relocatees join SMC reselling program
Over a hundred former Taliptip coastal residents are eyeing to become micro entrepreneurs under a program by San Miguel Corp. (SMC) that will provide them training and capital to become the company’s business partners, as community resellers of the food and beverage giant’s products.
The program is part of a host of financial, housing, skills training, and livelihood assistance given by SMC to former settlers at the future site of its P740-billion Manila International Airport project.
Under the community reseller program, SMC will provide the initial inventory of Purefoods and Magnolia frozen products, equipment to qualified relocatees, who will be formed into cooperatives with the help of the Cooperative Development Authority (CDA). SMC will also train relocatees in running the business.
So far, 180 relocatees have signified their interest in joining the program. A total of 48 individuals have already undergone a two-day entrepreneurship training.

Nickel Asia is first PH mining company accepted at UNGC
Nickel Asia Corp. (NAC), announced that it has been acknowledged as the first Philippines mining company to be accepted among the newest members of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC).
The world’s largest sustainability initiative, UNGC “supports global companies that are committed to responsible business practices in the areas of human rights, labor, the environment, and corruption ”.
Officially launched at the United Nation’s headquarters in New York in 2000, UNGC is based on a series of Principles that UN believes must be followed in order for a company to maintain its environmental and social responsibilities.
Having voluntarily signed up for the compact, NAC has agreed to uphold these principles.
“This is a huge deal for all of us at NAC because it effectively binds us to the proverbial umbilical cord of what UNGC represents to the world,” says Dennis Zamora, President and CEO of NAC.
Zamora, youngest President and CEO in the mining industry, son of mining icon Manny G. Zamora and founder of NAC, recently took the helm from Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) and current NAC Chairman, Gerry H. Brimo.
JB Baylon, NAC VP for Corporate Communications, says the standard operating procedures in all the mining companies under the NAC umbrella have long been setting the stage for the UNGC membership.
“The UNGC principles have been integrated in our corporate strategies and day-to-day operations and our membership to this global pact exposes the NAC companies to a more intense peer review… and UNGC will help demonstrate our track record as we publicly report on how effectively we manage environment, social and governance issues,” Baylon elaborates.
Mining cannot exist without social acceptance and responsible mining companies like NAC have taken it upon themselves to commit to sustainable business strategies in all aspects of operations.

Novo Nordisk Philippines launches #BeatObesityWithMe movement
To mark World Obesity Day last March 4, the Philippine Association for the Study of Overweight & Obesity (PASOO), Philippine Society of Hospital Pharmacists (PSHP), Philippine Pharmacists Association (PPhA), Association of Nursing Services Administrators of the Philippines (ANSAP), Nutritionist-Dietitians’ Association of the Philippines (NDAP) and the Royal Danish Embassy Manila, in partnership with Novo Nordisk Philippines, held a special edition of its Kalingang Novo Nordisk webinar to the general public. Multi-disciplinary group — doctors, nurses, pharmacists, and nutritionist-dietitians — gathered together and shared their knowledge and insights about the lesser known, but just as grave, global pandemic of obesity.
The webinar was hosted live on The Body of Truth Facebook page aiming to serve as an obesity advocacy campaign centered on giving people the myth-busting points about obesity and enable those who suffer from the disease to find a support system to effectively combat obesity in the country.
Dr. Ivan Cudal, an Endocrinolgist, hosted the webinar where experts shared their professional opinions and provided more information to help shed light on the complexity of the disease. Panelists included Dr. Mia C. Fojas (President, PASOO), Ms. Cecini Rose Pare (EduCare Nurse Educator), Ms. Hazel F. Docuyanan (Immediate Past President, PSHP), Ms. Ma. Gilda Sebua-Silja (President, PPHA) and Ms. Zenaida F. Velasco (President, NDAP).
Guest speakers were Ambassador Grete Sillasen of Denmark, VP & GM, Novo Nordisk Philippines Mr. Cihan Serdar Kizilcik, and Senior Medical Manager Novo Nordisk Philippines Dr. Cyrus Pasamba.
#BeatObesityWithMe aims to show that it is easier to shoulder a burden and solve a problem together with others.
