Smart Communications Inc. and Globe Telecom Inc. are expanding their fifth generation (5G) roaming rollout to the Middle East to tap the overseas Filipino worker market.

Smart has partnered with Zain, a leading mobile, voice and data services operator in the Middle East, to further expand its 5G roaming services in the region.

Under this partnership, Smart prepaid and postpaid customers overseas will be able to access 5G roaming speeds while in Bahrain, Kuwait and Saudi Arabia. The Middle East is the home of many overseas Filipinos, second to North America.

This partnership makes Smart the first Philippine operator to have the widest roaming coverage in the territory.

“Smart’s 5G roaming service allows a Smart subscriber to enjoy worry-free 5G service even while abroad through Smart’s 5G roaming partners. This is part of our commitment to deliver the best experience to our customers,” said Alice Ramos, Smart vice president for international roaming and consumer business.

Smart offers GigaRoam for P499 for 30 days.

Customers in Saudi Arabia and overseas customers in Kuwait and Bahrain can avail of the GigaRoam packs for P999 for 5 days.

Meanwhile, Globe is set to launch 5G in more parts of Asia and the Middle East in the coming weeks to help customers traveling abroad, Filipinos working overseas as well as foreign travelers visiting the Philippines.

Globe is set to open its 5G service to visiting customers of CSL Hong Kong, Singtel of Singapore and Ooredoo of Kuwait. While for Globe subscribers who will be traveling abroad, the 5G roaming service will be made available in South Korea through SK Telecom, Qatar and Kuwait via Ooredoo.

“Apart from ensuring that our customers are able to rely on a service to keep them connected during these challenging times, our goal in getting the 5G service up in more countries is to make certain that when travel becomes more safe and less restricted, our Globe customers will be able to enjoy 5G in more countries worldwide,” said Coco Domingo, Globe vice president for postpaid and international business.

Globe is a pioneer in 5G technology in the Philippines with 1,200 areas across the country with this latest generation in wireless technology. Its sustained network builds and modernization efforts resulted in higher 5G footprint for Globe.

Globe has set its sights on making its 5G roaming services accessible soon in more countries in the Middle East, North America, Asia and Europe through its roaming partners.
