Private sector tapped for busway bridges

The Department of Transportation yesterday signed an agreement with SM Prime Holdings, D.M. Wesceslao and Associates Inc.and Double Dragon Properties Corp., for the construction of EDSA Busway bridges with concourse.

The memorandum of agreement provides the private sector partners will shoulder the expenses.

The EDSA Busway bridges with concourse will be located at SM Mall of Asia, SM North EDSA, SM Megamall, President D. Macapagal Boulevard in Aseana City, and at EDSA near the corner of President D. Macapagal avenue.

The construction is targeted to start within the next two to three months once the detailed engineering design is finalized and necessary permits are secured. Construction time is estimated to run from six to eight months.

The EDSA Busway — a system that utilizes a dedicated median lane for public utility buses — which runs from Monumento in Caloocan City to the SM Mall of Asia in Pasay City, has reduced travel time from the previous three to three and a half hours from Monumento to PITX, to just 50 minutes to an hour.

The bridges will have concierge, ticketing booths, and turnstiles for the Automatic Fare Collection System. Ramps and elevators will also be available to provide accessibility for PWDs, senior citizens, and pregnant women.
