Miners can realign social funds to vaccines

The Mines and Geosciences Bureau (MGB) has allowed mining companies to realign their annual social development and management program fund and safety and health program this year for the purchase new coronavirus disease 2019 (COVID-19) vaccines for host communities, employees and workers.

Under the memorandum issued on January 29 and signed by MGB director, Wilfredo Moncano, mining contractors and permit holders’ procurement of the vaccines must be in accordance with the guidelines and procedures set by the Department of Health and the National Taskforce on COVID-19 of the Inter-Agency Task Force for the Management of Emerging Infectious Diseases.

The MGB mandates all mining companies to report the implementation of the order in quarterly accomplishment reports.

The Chamber of Mines of the Philippines (COMP) said MGB’s order will provide a big boost to the government’s vaccination program and help hasten the nation’s recovery from this pandemic.

“Many of our members did request the MGB’s permission for the realignment of funds given that mass immunization from the deadly virus is our nation’s most pressing concern at the moment. We entrust the procurement and administration of the vaccine to our members who have a better sense of the situation on the ground. We encourage the widest possible coverage of the vaccination campaign and will monitor the progress of our members’ vaccination program,” COMP said.
