Gov’t probes 2 cigarette manufacturers

Bureau of Internal Revenue and the Philippine Economic Zone Authority (PEZA) are investigating two PEZA-registered enterprises engaged in manufacturing cigarettes for 100 percent export found to be non-compliant with BIR registration requirements.

PEZA in a statement said GB-BEM and GB Global were recently the subject of raids conducted by the BIR for operating without registration and other permits required in cigarette manufacturing. The matter is also the subject of parallel investigations by the BIR as well as the House Committee on Ways and Means.

PEZA has since withheld import shipments of the companies.

The firms will be meted with penalties by PEZA on top of whatever penalties BIR may impose .

PEZA enforces BIR’s requirements for excise tax on local sales of cigarettes manufactured by PEZA enterprises.

The two companies could not be reached for comment.
