Ban on plastic straw, stirrer pushed

The Department of Environment and Natural Resources said plastic straws and coffee stirrers may soon be banned after the National Solid Waste Management Commission (NSWMC) included the said items in the list of non-environmentally acceptable products (NEAP).

The agency said the draft resolution declaring the items as NEAP was deliberated through a virtual en banc meeting on Tuesday that concluded with 11 votes for approval and three votes for disapproval.

The DENR said the listing for NEAP is “long overdue” as it was part of the implementation of the Ecological Solid Waste Management Act of 2000. Under section 29 of the said law, the NSWMC should have prepared a list of non-environmentally acceptable products after public notice and hearing.

The DENR added that the resolution was passed despite “heavy resistance” from manufacturing and recycling industries.
