Vice Ganda was among five ABS-CBN artists honored as Box Office Heroes at the 8th Entertainment Editors’ Choice Awards (The EDDYS) held on Sunday, July 20, at the Marriott Ballroom in Newport World Resorts in Pasay.

The annual event, organized by the Society of Philippine Entertainment Editors (SPEEd), recognizes outstanding achievements in Philippine cinema. Vice Ganda was among those cited for their contribution to the local film box office through the performance of his film “And the Breadwinner Is…,” a top-grossing entry at the 2024 Metro Manila Film Festival.

During his acceptance speech, Vice Ganda addressed the criticisms his movies received from critics.

“Ang mga pelikula ko po, kahit hindi masyadong pumapasa sa panlasa ng mga kritiko, ay nagsisilbing pang-takas ng napakaraming pangkaraniwang masang Pilipino,” he said. “Para kahit papano makalimutan nila yung lungkot, problema at kawalan ng pag-asa dito sa Pilipinas.”

He also reflected on the enduring connection he shares with the Filipino public, forged over nearly two decades of daily television exposure.

“Ako at ang masang Pilipino ay may relasyon. May love-hate relationship kami, pero hindi kami nag-iiwanan,” he said. “Inuunawa ko sila lagi, at inuunawa din nila ako.”

Vice Ganda joined fellow awardees Kathryn Bernardo, Alden Richards, Joshua Garcia, and Julia Barretto, who were all recognized for their box office success. Bernardo and Richards were honored for “Hello, Love, Again,” while Garcia and Barretto received their award for “Un/happy for You.”

The EDDYS will air on July 27 on iWant, Kapamilya Channel and Jeepney TV.
