Rossel Velasco Taberna couldn’t contain her joy over the success of “Thrive: A Symphony of Thriving Stories,” held last September 26 at Metrotent in Pasig City. The event was a benefit concert-dinner for the Hematology and Cancer department of the Philippine Children’s Medical Center.
During the evening, Rossel revealed that the event raised P3.5 million, which they turned over to the center days before the show. “We did not sell any tickets. These are all from sponsors and donors. We have almost 600 guests tonight, and it’s a plated dinner-show. We’re incredibly grateful because, in just two weeks, we secured all our sponsors and donors.”
This wasn’t just a benefit show; it also celebrated the anniversary of Outbox Media Powerhouse Corp. (OBM), led by Rossel. “Thrive” was also a heartfelt thanksgiving for the bravery of Helga and Zoe Taberna, the daughters of Rossel and Anthony. Before the pandemic, the Taberna family faced a tremendous challenge when Zoe was diagnosed with cancer. With the prayers and support of their loved ones, Zoe fought and overcame the disease, with her sister Helga stepping up as her donor.
A heartwarming round of applause filled the room after Zoey and Helga performed and shared their emotional messages with the audience. The group Acapellago opened the show with an impressive performance, followed by powerful sets from Darren Espanto and Julie Anne San Jose. For Julie Anne, performing at such events holds special significance. As someone who is closely connected to children, she shared that supporting children battling cancer is one of her personal advocacies.
“I have a special bond with children. I’ve been in touch with the Philippine Cancer Center for over a decade. Whenever I have the chance, like on my birthdays or last Christmas, I make it a point to give back. It feels so rewarding. I believe that the talent given to you should be shared, not kept to yourself,” Julie Anne shared.
Veteran performers Ogie Alcasid and Lani Misalucha also wowed the crowd with their exceptional performances, adding to the evening’s memorable lineup.
Through it all, Rossel felt nothing but gratitude. “It’s still overwhelming. I’m incredibly proud of my children, especially their willingness to fight and their desire to help other children,” she said.
When asked about thriving through sickness and life’s challenges, Rossel emphasized, “Don’t ever doubt. When you pray kailangan buo ang loob mo, 100% ang pananampalataya mo. Naniniwala kami sa pamilya namin na konting pag-aalinlangan lang might be the cause kung bakit hindi ibinibigay ang pinapanalangin natin. Dapat po pag nananalangin tayo, walang pag-aalinlangan.”
The delicious dinner served during the “Thrive” event was provided by Taste of the Town, while generous sponsors, including UAAGI: Baic, Chery, Foton, Lynk & Co, San Miguel Corporation, Villar City, Vista Estates, Ever Bilena, RC Ramos Construction, Antonio Chua Jr., Alice G.
