After capturing the hearts of audiences across the Philippines with its emotionally powerful performances, “San Pedro Calungsod The Musical” is set to reach new heights with the release of its highly anticipated cast album this May.
Originally staged between 2014 and 2016 with a triumphant final performance at the Music Museum in February 2020, the musical masterpiece will now be available for listeners worldwide in the form of a beautifully crafted recording that preserves its message of faith, sacrifice and devotion.
At the center of this album is acclaimed Filipino singer-actor Gerald Santos, who reprises his role as the beloved young saint Pedro Calungsod.
Gerald, known internationally for his powerful vocals and theatrical range, not only performs the titular role but also contributes as a composer.
His voice breathes new life into soul-stirring songs such as “I Offer My Life” and “The Journey,” capturing the profound essence of Calungsod’s mission and martyrdom.
The album showcases 18 meticulously composed tracks written by Antonino Rommel Ramilo, the visionary behind the musical’s libretto and stage direction.
Rommel’s dual roles as writer and director help define the show’s deep emotional resonance and historical integrity.
His work, alongside Gerald’s musical contributions, ensures the album maintains the same intensity and heart that gripped theatergoers during the show’s live run.
Joining Gerald are returning cast members from the well-received 2020 ensemble: Kuya Manzano as Father Diego Luis de San Vitores, Hutch Perales as Matapang, Lablin Layson “Vince” Vicentuan as Choco, Oscarlito JR Baccol as Hirao, Heidi Arima as Mother.
Their performances add rich layers to the narrative, delivering both dramatic and spiritual depth through music.
New additions to the cast album include Donyl Alcantara, Mark Jhonsen Moises Bognot, Jesu Miguel Tan, Maria Krischellei Robles and Francheska Danielle Delica, whose voices add fresh energy to the production’s legacy.
The musical, which dramatizes the life of Pedro Calungsod – a young Filipino catechist and missionary who was martyred in Guam during the 17th century – earned widespread recognition during its run.
Among its many accolades are the 2020 Aliw Award for Best Musical Revival and multiple BroadwayWorld Philippines honors, including Best Performer of the Decade for Gerald Santos, Stage Direction of the Decade for Ramilo and Lights Designer of the Decade for Joey Nombres.
“This album is more than just music – it’s a mission,” said Gerald. “It’s about carrying forward the spirit of Pedro Calungsod, who showed us what it means to live a life of faith, courage and ultimate sacrifice.”
The Pedro Calungsod album will be this May 16 in all digital music platforms.
