Martin Nievera, the undisputed “Concert King of the Philippines,” is set to mark his 42nd year in the entertainment industry with a concert called “The King 4Ever” on September 27 at the Smart Araneta Coliseum. The show is produced by Cacai Mitra and Ogie Alcasid, who have always been ardent fans of Martin, and directed by the singer’s godchild Paolo Valenciano with good friend Louie Ocampo as musical director and Frank Mamaril as TV director.
Fellow OPM icon Ogie Alcasid revealed that as a member of La Salle Greenhills’ Kundirana, his memorable solo performance was Martin’s song “How Could You Be So Blind?” Ogie acknowledged Martin’s influence on his own career and lauded the veteran singer’s humility, saying Martin does not want to call himself “Concert King” despite the title being widely used by the media and his fans.
At the recent press conference held at Solaire North’s Skybar, Martin shared how he was dubbed “Concert King” by a member of the press. Martin said the late Bob Castillo, a former entertainment editor, gave him the title. “He was calling me ‘Concert King’ kuno,” Martin recalled, “But he meant it sarcastically because he didn’t want to really call me that.
Somehow, the title stuck.”
The singer admitted he never believed the “Concert King” title, stating, “Because if you believed you’re king, I don’t think we would be having this conversation and you wouldn’t like me too much.”
Martin’s rise to fame began in 1982 with the release of “Martin… Take One,” which achieved platinum status in just five months. Over the past four decades, he has staged sold-out shows here and abroad and released numerous multi-platinum albums, cementing his status as one of the highest-selling Filipino recording artists of all time.
Joining Martin on stage for “The King 4Ever” concert are his ex-wife Pops Fernandez, their son Robin Nievera, “Songbird” Regine Velasquez, who is also Ogie’s wife, The CompanY and another dear friend, Gary Valenciano.
Though reluctant, Martin Nievera will always be the one and only “King 4Ever” in the hearts of his fans, who have supported him throughout his illustrious career.
