The Streetboys are celebrating their 31st year with an anniversary concert set for November 8 at the New Frontier Theater, promising fans a show they’ll definitely enjoy. Vhong, Jhong, Chris, Joseph, Joey, Maynard, and Nico are set to bring back the sounds and moves that made all the guys jealous and the girls — and gays — go wild for the “SB90s The Streetboys Reunion Dance Concert.”
For the first time ever, all eleven members will perform together, as Vhong confirmed at last Sunday’s press con at Siesta Horchata in Quezon City.
It will be a strut down memory lane, although the group admitted there will be some changes.
“Nakaka pag-tumbling pa rin naman, may kasama lang dasal,” Jhong added.
“Wala na death-defying kasi may mga anak na po kami,” Vhong said.
The group has been diligently preparing for the show, practicing their routines and working hard to sync their schedules, despite living in different time zones, said Direk Chito Roño, mentor and manager. They have slowly but surely gotten their groove back through diet, practice, exercise and a lot of stretching, the director added. Nico, now a Zumba instructor in Dubai, shared that they’ve adapted by recording their rehearsals to ensure they’re in sync come showtime.
Concert producer Ogie Alcasid is equally excited about the reunion, recalling how the idea came together when he discovered that several of the members would be flying back home around the same time.
“Kayo ‘yung pinagpyepyestahan ng mga bading. Pagka sumasayaw na raw kayo, I’m sure maraming manonood sa inyo,” the singer-songwriter remarked.
Although the group’s journey hasn’t always been steady — some members left early, while others found success in “Miss Saigon” or in TV and film like in Vhong and Jhong’s case — their bond remains strong. They continue to support each other’s victories, seeing themselves as family. Each member acknowledges the impact Streetboys had on their lives, expressing sentiments like “dahil sa Streetboys nagkapangalan ako,” “nakaipon at naging artista,” “naging maayos buhay ko,” “naging family oriented,” “napunta sa iba’t ibang bansa,” “naging professional,” and “nagka brothers as in brotherhood.”
Jhong reflected on his growth, crediting Direk Chito’s guidance for helping him develop in the entertainment industry.
“Nung nagsimula ako sa Streetboys, as in zero… marunong lang ako tumambling,” he shared. “With the help of Direk Chito and my persistence, I eventually learned to host, with Vhong’s help. Hindi ko akalain magiging host ako ng ‘Showtime’ pag dating ng panahon.”
He added, “Na realize ko na ngayon kung ano yung purpose ng Panginoon sa akin dito sa mundo. Mag-entertain pala at magpasaya ng tao then tumulong. Sobrang pasalamat ako dahil isa ako sa mga napili na gumawa nun, and nagkaroon pa ng bonus, pati pala anak ko magiging entertainer din pala.”
Would there be a 35th or 40the anniversary reunion show in the future for Streetboys?
“Hahaha, nakatungkod na,” Direk Chito said.
