Singing, acting and dreaming big

IT has been two months since Sofronio Vasquez won “The Voice” Season 26 and he has been making great strides to fulfill his dreams.

First off, the 32-year-old singer from Mindanao has signed with Star Magic. Last Tuesday, Sofronio received a warm welcome from ABS-CBN executives Riley Santiago, Laurenti Dyogi and Cory Vidanes, chief operating officer for Broadcast, as he ticked off one item in his bucket list.

“Gusto naman talaga namin na patunayan na magaling talaga ang husay ng isang Filipino artist,” said Direk Lauren in his welcome message to Vasquez.

Now that he is a bonafide Kapamilya, Sofronio admitted he is willing to act, saying he can be a singing goon in “FPJ’s Batang Quiapo.”

Next in the pipeline is his life story. Sofronio revealed that he has been asked several times who he wants to appear as himself, and he mentioned Elijah Canlas, who was also featured in “Incognito,” one of his favorite shows.

“Actually, nagkaroon na kami ng mga meeting, mayroon ng briefing, storytelling. Mayroon na ring interview. And tinatanong ako kung gusto kong umarte? Kaso, natsa-challenge ako. Sabi ko gusto ko na lang kumanta. Pero kung balak talaga nilang ipasok ako, sa ‘Batang Quiapo’ na lang kahit na mafia ang role ko.

“Huwag lang ‘yung iyak-iyak kasi hindi ko yata kaya. Pero hindi ko alam. I mean everything now is a possibility,” he said.

“I am so hooked up with the teleserye now, ‘yung ‘Incognito.’ So sana mabigyan ako ng pagkakataon… Elijah Canlas. That would be exciting. He’s very good in acting,”

Another interesting development is his entry to musical theater. Sofronio excitedly announced he has received an offer to join “Miss Saigon” as Vietnamese character Thuy. His current schedule is hectic, he admitted, but he would want to make time for his London stage debut.

When asked why he chose to sign up locally instead of continuing his international track, Sofronio saw nothing wrong with it, extolling his fellow Filipino artists, like SB19 and BINI and Fil-Am superstars likes HER, Apl de Ap and Olivia Rodrigo who have made it huge in the international arena.

When it comes to musical collaborations, first in his list is his “The Voice” coach, Michael Buble. Locally, he would be thrilled to work with renowned Filipino artists Regine Velasquez, Martin Nievera, Ogie Alcasid and Lea Salonga, among others.

With his new home and his many projects, the future can only be bright for Sofronio, who is making his countrymen proud one step at a time.
